Dr. María del Carmen Sillato has done extensive research on the poetry of Juan Gelman, the universally acclaimed contemporary poet in the Spanish language. Her book Juan Gelman: Las estrategias de la otredad. Heteronimia, intertextualidad, traducción (Beatriz Viterbo, 1996) received the Best Book Award (1997), a prestigious distinction awarded by the Canadian Association of Hispanists. Dr. Sillato has also published numerous articles in edited volumes and journals, and participated as an invited lecturer in several conferences dedicated to Gelman’s work. Currently, Dr. Sillato continues contributing to the study of Gelman’s poetry, and at the same time, is involved in a research project about testimonial writing as a tool for healing trauma, for which she has received two research grants. She has published several articles on testimonial literature, and was invited to deliver academic lectures at graduate seminars in Canadian and American universities.  Her book, Diálogos de amor contra el silencio. Memorias de prisión, sueños de libertad (Alción, 2006) was recognized with the First Prize in the Literary Competition Year 2000: The Historical Memory of Latin American and Caribbean Women.  The recently published anthology Huellas. Memorias de Resistencia (Argentina 1974-1983) (Nueva Editorial Universitaria, 2008), coordinated, edited and with an introduction by Dr Sillato, is a collection of testimonies in the creative writing style by ex political prisoners of the state terrorism in Argentina.  The two books –Diálogos and Huellas— represent genuine contributions to the reconstruction of the historical memory in Argentina.
